Like an ambassador that represents a country, we as “believers” represent God’s goodness in everything we say and do. How well each of us represents Him is the question to consider. The Message version of this verse defines it well. Clearly illustrating not to be shy or shameful of our belonging in Jesus Christ; but instead, be bold and proud.
"Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
Mathew 5:16 (The Message)
The Lord needs and requires His people (you and I) to daily honor God in our speech and our actions that give Him glory. Simple example, the other day when I was having my car tested for emissions, the testing operator announced to me afterwards “You passed”. In my immediate response, I quickly said, “Praise the Lord – thank you!”. She then smiled at me and responded in an appreciative “Amen”. Simple as this is, it’s important that we publicly give God honor in the good and the bad. In the company of Christians and nonchristians.
Remember, a lighthouse that produces no light is worthless in guiding a lost ship. Let your schedule today and interactions with people be a bridge for others to hear and see God’s love in action. Through YOU! You can produce a light that may pull someone out of the darkness of satins miserable-hold and create a spark of hope that leads to Christ. Let everyday be an opportunity to be a bright light for God.
